Guidelines for Receiving Alimony in Texas

Question:  What are the guidelines in Texas for receiving alimony?

Answer:  Texas allows alimony under very limited circumstances. For example, the marriage must be at least 10 years in length, the spouse seeking alimony has insufficient property to provide for the spouse's minimum reasonable needs, and the spouse seeking alimony can't support himself or herself because of physical or mental disability. Texas Family Code section 8.051(A). That is one of the several very restrictive scenarios. However, child support and spousal support may be ordered while a divorce is pending.
